For 35 years I malfunctioned over the name of this classic love song, calling it They Love Each Other. Am I the only one? When I first heard it in '73, they were doing the fast version as mentioned. This AUD from 73-06-09 might be a wee-bit faster than most. I'll re-program the name in the jpg player next time. I'm recycling this e-waste here. All my old tapes will remain miss-labeled.

From Starlight, my personal favorite for reasons I couldn't begin to describe, it just trips my trigger.

isnt it funny how certain versions of songs just grab you in a certain way? i mean it may not be the most action packed or have the strongest jam or singing, but theres something about the sound, the setting, a tiny lick here and there. and you just connect with it and it hits you harder than anything else. i feel that way about the 10-31-83 peggy o

Early TLEOs were uptempo and plenty funky--check out this standout from the highly regarded Denver show 11/21/73:

This 11/21/1973 is an excellent choice.

Real nice one from Lindley Meadows...

Also a superb first set gem from Iowa 5/13/73 at the Tapers section...

You could also try the second set opener from 2/26/73 which might be on DP #28

Don't miss this one. Best of the "slow version" era, IMO:

For the original "fast version" they used to play starting out, with the extra verse included that was omitted from the later versions, it's hard to beat this one:

I really like the Jacksonville Fla version of 4/8/78. If you can get the upgraded version(miller flac) of this show, it is awesome!

The Lindley Meadows one is great and I'd never heard it before. What a treat! Jerry's solo is definitely the best I've heard in any TLEO.

This is easy. There are two incarnations to the song. The first one starts in 1973 and lasts about a year, through 1974 (although it was rarely played in 1974). This is the upbeat, dancin', almost-disco like version of the song that is a lot of fun to listen and move to.

Then the change. Starting in 1976 it became a ballad, fairly different from the original. Deadheads were up in arms!! Lord only knows why Jerry rewrote the song to make it a ballad. UGH.

So I would go through archive.org, just about every 1973 show has a They Love Each Other. Listen to it and enjoy. Then compare to anything after 1975. You'll notice the difference and I bet you'll prefer the former.

hi smgarcia .... we have had this exchange before. but last time i was in complete agreement with you.... and i still do prefer the song's first uptempo incarnation.... but i have since gained a little more appreciation for the slowed down take -- i suspect jerry re-arranged it so he could PLAY MORE NOTES on his solo.....like on this version from April 19, 1982

Hey buddy...I'm going to listen to that version right now. Truthfully I much liked the ballad and then one day I discovered the faster versions from 1973 and fell in love with the song. And then it made it even more difficult for me to listen to the newer ballad.

But I'm listening to your link now and I can see why you like it! Thanks for the tip and hope you had a good Thanksgiving.

Forum: GratefulDead Subject: THE WORD IS?

LOOK ... here is the word: this is the word that is always missing when you talk about jerry garcia post say 76/77 or so... it was there from the beginning of course to a degree... but it is, well... look, This is not The Word, but ONE word might be, Tempo -- he was keyed in on tempo at a very high level of sophistication, and what i mean when i say that is, a level of sophistication like what picasso or gauguin had attained, as well as ellington and coltrane. it IS rock n roll, but we take the level of expertise for granted........ they make it seem like a bit of an accident, but all along they are trying their asses off not to be accidental...

with the attention to tempo and equally melody by Jerry Garcia from 76 on, the Gospel element comes more clearly into play. this direction and emphasis by jerry, on the slow tempo and attention to melody would influence the dead, but more be relegated to Jerry Band Land -- he would pursue the slow tempos and gospel inclination very deliberately with the JGB.

this is a complicated assertion and not fully formed on my part. but more simply, my idea is that jerry directed the band heavily through 75-77, creating the TEMPO/MELODY FRAMEWORK that would guide the group back into having TWO DRUMMERS and a richer more electronic sound. it was a reformulation of the music due to personnel changes and changing attitudes about presentation. it was part of the realization of the MASS COMMUNICATION that they were undertaking. the band KNEW what they were doing at every turn. the emotions that they were going to tap into. it was a dance with the audience every night. it was a sculpting of an experience very carefully, layer by layer, emotion by emotion....

sometimes they WERE killing time... other times they were wrought with emotions themselves, flying by the seat of their pants, having a wild shitload of fun.....

like tell me you didn't listen to the TLEO and stick around for On The Road Again? if you don't like this song... you better just go away -- because this is THE BEST OF THE DEAD.... you want to know what was up with these guys listen to this track a few times and tell me you are not laughing like a fucking hyena it is so much fun.... THE PERFECT PERFECTLY FUCKED UP BROTHERS BAND!

the reworked TLEO highlights what i call the GOSPEL element, and THAT IS THE WORD -- from morning dew, and death don't jerry always had the inclination to inflect this sort of spiritualness into his music....

Agree that this TLEO--and indeed the entire show--is fantastic, especially w/the Miller upgrade.

Virtually all of April 1978 is brilliant and there are excellent boards floating around here.

Check out the Scarlet>Fires from 4/16 and 4/24 and the all-time Row Jimmy from 4/12.

Thanks for the Row Jimmy Tip. I really like the mix on that version! I love the whole 4/78 mix, song lineup and the band performances just sparkle. They must have had a band meeting after the 4/6/78 fiasco cause everything after that is killer.

Do you have a Flac from 4/12 that you could seed? That's one I haven't nabbed yet... I'd be willing to do some mail trades such as 4 flac shows to a DVDR. Let me know and I'll send you my list.

sorry BYB

I'm a bit challenged in the whole "Flac" arena, but I'm willing to bet there are some other forum folks who could help you out there. That 4/12/78 show is def. worth having in the best copy possible.

I'll tell ya what. If you email me your address, I'll mail you a copy of 4/8/78. When you hear that show in lossless, it may push you over the edge and get you into downloading some flacs.

It's not too hard to do the flacs if your interested. Go on www.download.com and download the free Flashget download manager. When you have that up and running, you can download bit torrents from www.etree.org. To get to the gd torrents, from the main page, click on shns in circ, Grateful Dead and click on recent(where the years are listed) and click on any show with a green bit torrent next to it. The recent shows usually have lots of seeders so you're assured a reliable download of the complete torrent.

Media Monkey and Burrrn are two software packages that are both free and will let you easily manage, play and burn flacs. For shns, you can get Traders little helper.
